What is Dharm (धर्म )

let us understand Dharm first and then sanatan dharm.

Google definition says “Dharma, a Sanskrit term, broadly signifies “duty,” “righteousness,” “law,” or “what is right,” encompassing universal principles that govern existence and promote harmony.”

“Dharma represents fundamental laws and principles that govern the universe and human conduct.”

Dharm is the eternal and undisputable truth that cannot be defied or challenged, in simple way “a mango tree will bear mango fruit that’s its dharm it will not bear guava or tomato…” so dharm is sacrosanct cannot be challenged. Hence, sanatan dharm is the only dharm, the eternal truth and the only truth no one can challenge.

Wherever else dharm suffix is used is incorrect, lets understand this through some more examples of sanatan dharm principles.

  1. Whole world and all animals and humans are made of Panch tatva (5 elements) …. These elements considered inanimate are sacred in Hinduism they are – air, water, fire, space and earth are worshipped by us. There are puja processes and yagna to worship these elements to express our gratitude to these elements and not misuse them. If we followed teachings of Vedas and sanatan dharma principles there would not have been so much of air pollution, water pollution destruction of forests waste of natural resources leading to huge calamities. We are exploiting every element that’s destroying our nature, our health.

  1. Jyotish Vigyan : Vigyan means science.  Astrology or jyotish is an undisputable and exact science, far more advance than modern astronomy, agriculture, plant based medicine,  and even climate / whether forecast/ predictions. One may be surprised but the whole world is today thriving on the contribution of sanatan dharm’s jyotish for their calendars, 7 days a week, 12 months, 365 days in a year ….its all  taken from sanatan dharm shastra. To make you trust these statements as 100% true and undisputable take an example of any brahmin pandit from the remotest village in Bharat , after 50 years or 100 years in the past,  any date you give, he can tell you the planetary positions with exact details, he can tell you when solar eclipse or lunar eclipse will happen… without using any computer or instruments by using the book that’s called panchang based on sanatan dharm principles of jyotish vigyan.

Sanatan Dharm

Hinduism is another name for Sanatan Dharma or Varnashrama Dharma.

A few centuries ago, Iran residents used to pronounce “S” as “H”.  Our ancestors used to live across the Indus (Sindh) river, so Iranians used to call them Hindus instead of sindhu’s, later the Mughals also started calling us as Hindus.

Sanatan word means “there is no beginning or the end”, so it’s always there every time the creation of universe occurs. All the other religions, sects, beliefs and doctrines are propagated initiated by human beings. Sanatan Dharm is not created by human beings.

Its easy to understand the meaning of “sanatan” but very difficult to understand what “dharm” means. Many ancient saints (Rishis) in vedic era explained and elaborated with many examples that “Dharm” means the “laws of nature” , no one created them they have been always there from the beginning, the creation of universe. These laws are applicable for every living being on earth. As an example yog in vedas is a science that helps all human beings to be attuned to the nature and thereby live a healthy life, it doesn’t matter which religion or doctrine one is following. Similarly ayurveda is a medicine science in vedas and it also applies for everyone irrespective of religion, cast or race.

Ancient saints (Rishi & muni’s), with their yogic, meditative powers understood the laws of nature and defined them in vedic scriptures we can call this “Ancient Science” which is far more advance than present modern science. Understanding laws of nature means:

  1. All our day to day activities are possible because of the knowledge about our solar system, planetary movements, day, month year, zodiac and constellations .
  2. Influence of sun and moon on the plant and animal life.
  3. The science of Yog that teaches how should we live in tandem with nature.
  4. The science of agriculture and ayurved.
  5. Healthy food for overall health and well being

Sanatan Dharm is also called “Varnashram Dharm”

Vedas are the foundation of Sanatan Dharma. The followers of Sanatan Dharma followed the Vedas which is also called Varnashram tradition or Varnashram Dharma. The true identity of Hindus is Varnashram. As long as the Vedic Varnashram Dharma was followed, all the people in India were happy, healthy and prosperous.

All the social problems of modern times are due to the long-term rule of foreign invaders over India due to which Vedic knowledge and Varnashram traditions gradually disappeared.

What is Varnashram?

According to the Vedas, God divided human beings into four classes based on their work and capabilities (virtue, strength area), which are as follows:

Four Varnas and Brief Information about them:

  1. Brahmins – Intellectuals, priests, people having knowledge of Vedas, teachers, people of virtuous conduct were given the title of Brahmin and they were the guides of all the sections of the society.
  2. Kshatriya – Rulers, kings, protectors, people skilled in the art of war etc. were called Kshatriya
  3. Vaishya the business community, farmers.
  4. Shudra Those who do works other than mentioned above were called Shudras.
