Meera Bai: The Queen of Devotion Who Danced with the Divine

In the vast legacy of Bhakti saints, one name shines with unshakable faith, fearless devotion, and poetic beauty—Meera Bai, the mystic poetess and saint who surrendered her life in love for Lord Krishna. Her life is not just a story of spiritual love but a beacon of what true bhakti (devotion) can look like in its purest form.

Born a princess, she lived like a saint. Mocked by society, yet honored by the Divine. Meera Bai’s devotion transcended all boundaries—of caste, creed, gender, and even marriage—to become one with her Beloved Krishna.

Who Was Meera Bai?

  • Born: Around 1498 CE, in Merta, Rajasthan
  • Family: Rajput royal family of Rajasthan
  • Married to: Prince Bhoj Raj of Chittor
  • Spiritual path: Devotion (Bhakti) to Lord Krishna

From a young age, Meera was enchanted by the murti (idol) of Lord Krishna gifted to her. She believed she was married to Krishna, not to any worldly man. Even after her marriage into the royal household, her soul belonged only to her Lord.

Her Love for Krishna

For Meera, Krishna was not just God—He was her Beloved, her Friend, her Everything. She would sing, dance, and write poetry for Him, often losing herself in divine ecstasy.

“मेरे तो गिरधर गोपाल, दूसरो न कोई।
जा के सिर मोर मुकुट, मेरो पति सोई॥”

“My only Lord is Giridhar Gopal (Krishna); I belong to none but Him.
He who wears the peacock feather, He alone is my husband.”

Her poems—called bhajans—are still sung across India, overflowing with love, longing, surrender, and joy. She turned pain into poetry, and isolation into illumination.

Her Trials and Courage

Meera Bai’s life was not easy. Her in-laws disapproved of her devotion. Rumors and conspiracies surrounded her. Attempts were made to poison her, drown her, or dishonor her—yet nothing could shake her love for Krishna.

She chose the path of surrender over fear, devotion over social acceptance.

“If your love for the Lord is true, no obstacle can stop you.
Walk away from the world and walk toward your Beloved.”
– Meera

Eventually, she renounced royal life and wandered barefoot from temple to temple—singing, dancing, and living in divine ecstasy.

Her Legacy

Meera Bai is remembered as:

  • A Bhakti saint who inspired millions with her poetry
  • A feminine mystic who defied patriarchy and tradition
  • A symbol of divine love and spiritual courage
  • An eternal voice in devotional music and literature

Her compositions are still sung in temples, homes, and gatherings. They transcend time and language, stirring the soul toward Krishna consciousness.

A Glimpse of Her Bhakti (Poem)

“पायो जी मैंने राम रतन धन पायो।
बस ताने में रखी है, और दुनिया सारा ख्वाब हुआ॥”

“I have found the jewel of God’s name.
I hold it close, and the rest of the world fades into a dream.”

Her words are not just poetry—they are devotional fire.
